翻译技巧

剖析词性：

① Ironically, they are worse at …

此句涉及到置于句首的副词的翻译。在现代英语中，存在以副词开头引出全句的情况，如fortunately、unfortunately、naturally、generally、ironically等。置于句首的副词不是修饰句中的个别词语，而是修饰整个句子。这类副词一般在翻译时单独成句。例如，这句话里的Ironically可译为“讽刺的是，……”。

It turns out为插入语，可以不一定要译出。

says Chong也要前置翻译，与上一句话相关联，译文“……还说”。

该句涉及英语的“动词+副词”结构，直译过来就是“更有目地和更谨慎地讲英语”，全句就是“事实证明，非母语者会更有目的和更谨慎地说英语”，这个译法读来有些不符合汉语的表达习惯，此时可考虑转换词性，把副词purposefully和carefully转换为形容词，译为“事实证明，非母语者讲英语时更有目的性，也更小心谨慎”。

理清句子结构：

② ...they are worse at delivering their message than people who speak English as a second or third language.

汉语一般先出大背景。“...与将英语作为第二或第三语言的人相比，英语母语者反而更不擅长传达信息。试比较：“...英语母语者比与将英语作为第二或第三语言的人反而更不擅长传达信息”。

第二个译法没有错误，但句子较长，不太符合汉语喜用短句的表达习惯，因此可酌情调整语序，把句子变短。
