To reduce the consumption of foods and drinks that are high in sugar, salt, and fat, I think imposing more taxes could be useful for some individuals, but such a measure is not a magic cure-all for people from all walks of life.

Firstly, one advantage of raising taxes is that this will contribute to the public health of low-income people. As a high tax increases the price of unhealthy food products, low-income earners will have to purchase fewer of them, so they lower the excessive intake of sugar, salt and fat. As a result, this can help reduce obesity rates and curb other diseases such as diabetes. In this case, the overall health levels of a region will be enormously improved. At the root of this situation are the taxes imposed on those unhealthy foods and drinks.

On the other hand, for high-income earners, raising taxes may not make a big difference. By that I mean, if taxes are not high enough and unhealthy foods and drinks are still affordable, paying the tax will not be a great expense for high-income earners based on his or her income. For example, a high-earning person addicted to unhealthy drinks like instant coffee and juices might continue buying them even if these products are more expensive. As a result, people will have less money left to spend on healthy options. That certainly wouldn't discourage consumers from taking in sugar and fat or benefit their overall health.

Moreover, alternative measures exist and one option relates to public awareness. Both a high-earning person and a lower-earning one will take action if there is sustained negative publicity about excessive intake of sugar and fat. A good example of this is Singapore. In 2019, Singapore became the first country in the world to ban ads for unhealthy drinks and introduce nutrition warning labels. These front-of-pack labels would list nutritional quality, clearly signaling the presence of high levels of sugar and fat. As it turned out, the labels were highly effective in terms of raising consumer awareness. Evidence has shown that such labels have modified consumer behavior by shifting their purchases from unhealthy foods to healthier options.

In brief, I agree that imposing taxes could be useful for some but there are more effective solutions as well.
